Trees and shrubs

In order to create a pleasing visual landscape and a varied natural habitat 480 000 trees and shrubs have been planted. The majority of these were planted as 600mm whips but some larger trees of 2 to 3 metres were put in around the centre of the park in order to give a more immediate effect.

The species chosen for the site are predominantly native ones, some chosen for their fast growing potential on poor soils, others for longer term, more mature woodland.

The species planted include:-

birch

hawthorn

willow

blackthorn

alder

rowan

poplar

field maple

pine

dog rose

ash

hazel

oak

guelder rose

lime

The first phase of planting began on the north eastern boundary whilst opencasting was still going on in 1977. These woodlands represent the most mature plantings on the park and now form a true woodland habitat.
